What is Sustainably Sourced Seafood?

Sustainably sourced seafood refers to fish and shellfish that are caught or farmed in ways that protect the environment, support marine ecosystems, and ensure long-term viability for both the species and the communities that rely on them. This includes practices such as:

  • Responsible Fishing Practices: Methods that minimize bycatch (the capture of unintended species), avoid damaging habitats, and adhere to catch limits that prevent overfishing.

  • Aquaculture Standards: Sustainable farming techniques that reduce pollution, conserve water, and avoid the use of harmful chemicals or antibiotics, while ensuring the welfare of the animals.

  • Certification Programs: Seafood that comes from fisheries or farms certified by organizations like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is often deemed sustainable.

  • Local Sourcing: Supporting local fishermen and aquaculture operations that use sustainable practices helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting seafood.

  • Seasonal Awareness: Choosing seafood that is in season helps ensure that populations are healthy and that ecosystems remain balanced.

By opting for sustainably sourced seafood, consumers help protect ocean habitats, support local economies, and contribute to the overall health of marine life.

Why is Sustainably Sourced Seafood Important?

Sourcing seafood sustainably is crucial for several interconnected reasons:

  • Marine Ecosystem Health: Overfishing and harmful fishing practices can devastate fish populations and disrupt entire ecosystems. Sustainable practices help maintain biodiversity and protect vital habitats.

  • Food Security: Healthy fish populations are essential for global food security. Sustainable fishing ensures that seafood remains available for future generations, supporting both human diets and livelihoods.

  • Economic Stability: Many coastal communities depend on fishing for their livelihoods. Sustainable seafood practices help preserve these industries, ensuring that local economies remain robust and resilient.

  • Climate Change Mitigation: Healthy oceans play a significant role in regulating the climate. Sustainable practices can reduce carbon emissions associated with fishing and aquaculture, helping to combat climate change.

  • Consumer Health: Seafood can be a nutritious part of our diet, but sourcing it sustainably helps minimize exposure to harmful chemicals and contaminants that can arise from unsustainable practices.

  • Ethical Considerations: Many consumers are increasingly concerned about animal welfare and environmental ethics. Sourcing seafood sustainably aligns with these values, ensuring that marine life is treated humanely and responsibly.

By prioritizing sustainable seafood, we contribute to a healthier planet, support local communities, and ensure that we can continue to enjoy the ocean's bounty for years to come.

What Can You Do?

Supporting sustainably sourced seafood is easier than you might think! Here are some actionable steps you can take:

  • Educate Yourself: Learn about sustainable seafood practices and which species are considered sustainable. Resources like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Seafood Watch provide valuable information.

  • Choose Certified Products: Look for labels or certifications like MSC or ASC when purchasing seafood. These labels indicate that the product meets sustainability standards.

  • Shop Local: Support local fishermen and seafood markets that prioritize sustainable practices. Buying local not only helps the community but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting seafood.

  • Ask Questions: When dining out or buying seafood, ask where the fish comes from and how it was caught or farmed. This encourages restaurants and retailers to prioritize sustainable sourcing.

  • Be Mindful of Your Choices: Some species are more vulnerable than others. Choose seafood that is abundant and responsibly managed, and consider alternatives to overfished species.

  • Reduce Food Waste: Plan your meals and store seafood properly to minimize waste. Using leftovers creatively can help you get the most out of your purchases.

  • Advocate for Change: Support policies and initiatives that promote sustainable fishing practices. Getting involved in local conservation efforts can make a significant impact.

  • Spread the Word: Share your knowledge about sustainable seafood with friends and family. The more people understand its importance, the greater the demand for sustainable options.

By making conscious choices and advocating for sustainability, you can play a vital role in protecting our oceans and ensuring that seafood remains a resource for future generations.

I'm Lizzie Witherell, a NOAA Youth Ambassador and student at

Mira Costa High School dedicated to promoting a healthier ocean and a more sustainable future for all. My interest in conservation and love of the ocean inspired me to spend a week in the summer of 2024 volunteering with the Spanish nonprofit Alnitak Research Institute in the Mediterranean Sea. During this time, I learned about the importance of sustainable fishing practices and was inspired to share this knowledge with my local beach community,
